Several Union students discovered that their class writing assignments had won them more than a good grade when winners were announced on March 10 for the Board of Trustees Writing Awards. 

“When I heard I won, I was so excited!” said sophomore Annika Cambigue, who took home a check for $1,000 for a collection of poems she wrote in Creative Writing class. “Winning this award definitely encourages me to keep practicing my writing.” 

Here are the winners for this school year:

For Expository Writing—”Don’t Tell Mom” by Maria Kercher.

For Lower-Division Research Writing—”Undersea Warfare: How Modern Technology Is Changing the Submarine Force of the United States Navy” by Myla Kaufmann.

Honorable Mentions in this category included “Charisma: What Is It, and What Role Does It Play in the Political Sphere?” by Sidney Needles and “An Analysis of Mass Media’s Impact on Voter Behavior” by Brian Peoples.

For Upper-Division Research Writing—”Silencing the Subordinate Speaker: An Analysis of Muted Group Theory” by Juliet Bromme.

For Creative Writing—”Growing Pains: A Collection of Poetry” by Annika Cambigue.

Honorable Mention in this category went to Lacey Stecker for “Ten Minutes to Go” and “Klutz Anonymous.” 

The awards were launched in 2010 by the Union College Board of Trustees to encourage students to develop their writing skills.
