Congratulations to the Union College Board of Trustees Writing Award recipients for the 2014-15 school year. Each winner in four categories was announced at the Leadership Symposium chapel on Sept. 22:
- For First-Year Research Writing—“Colleges and Poster Phenomenon” by Tori Severs
- For Creative Writing—“Her” by Sarah Ventura
- For Expository Writing—“Searching for an Awesome God” by Misha Darcy
- For Upper-Division Research Writing—“The Case for Diverse Dystopian Fiction” by Aphelandra Messer
“It was nice to be recognized,” said Tori Severs. “Writing is not one of my strengths, so to be recognized for something I put a lot of effort into was cool.”
The awards were launched in 2010 by the Union College Board of Trustees to encourage students to develop their writing skills. Dr. Tanya Cochran, professor of English at Union and organizer of the awards, says that the program is a way to tangibly show recognition and appreciation for students strong writing and effort. The recipients receive a certificate and one-thousand dollars for their hard work.
Each entry was evaluated by a panel of judges from both on and off campus to determine the category winners.
“I am very honored to be recognised for the exposition writing category,” said senior communication major Misha Darcy. “It means a lot to me that it’s coming from Union College. The award did not exist the first time I went through school, and so it’s exciting that Union has this award available to students. I think it really strengthens the writing program.”
