Job Description:

 

Teaches courses in education and psychology, supervises secondary student teachers, advises secondary education majors, and serves as liaison between the education unit and the Lincoln Public Schools for field experience and practicum placements.

Academic Background

 

Ph.D. with emphasis in Teacher Education and Supervision and cognate in Guidance and Counseling at Michigan State University.

M.A. in Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision at Andrews University.

B.A. with a major in English and a minor in Religious Philosophy at Spicer Memorial College.

Greeter and Adult Sabbath School teacher at College View SDA Church.

Represent Union College Teacher Education Program on the board of Seventh-day Adventist Schools of Lincoln (College View Academy and Helen Hyatt Elementary School)

Professional Background:

 

Nineteen years of college teaching (two years of undergraduate and graduate teaching at Michigan State University, and 17 years at Union College), 11 years of junior academy principalship and teaching in the Michigan Conference, and 13 years of elementary and secondary teaching in the Seventh-day Adventist schools in Malaysia and Singapore.

Personal Information:

 

Y.J. is married with two children, a son and a daughter. Both children completed medical school at Loma Linda University in 1998.

Y. J. is a grandfather of two lovely grandchildren in Michigan. They attend Kalamazoo SDA School. This year (2010) granddaughter Solana is in third grade and grandson Suvan is in grade one. They love school. They are also active in their local church Pathfinder program.

Children:

 

Both of Y.J.'s children received their elementary, secondary, college and graduate education in SDA schools. In 1998 they graduated from Loma Linda University Medical School

Son Kenneth is serving as a physician in Loma Linda, California. He is the principal author of the book Atlas of Gross Anatomy. It is used in several of the major public colleges and universities. Some of the Adventist colleges and universities, including the Union College Science Department, are using this book

Daughter Juanita is a pediatrician and dermatologist in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Son-in-law Douglas is an engineer and works for a company that makes medical equipment. 

Spouse:

 

Y. J.'s wife Gnani completed B.A. in Office Administration at Spicer Memorial College, India; M.A. and Ph.D. in Business Education at Michigan State University. She taught in public schools in Michigan before moving to Union College in 1992. She taught one year at Union in the Business Department.

She suffered a massive stroke in 2004 that left her paralyzed on the right side. She was in a nursing home in Lincoln for nearly three years. In 2007, she was moved to Kalamzaoo, Michigan, because her grandchildren wanted to spend more time with their grandmother.
