Circulation Services

The library is open to all Union College students, staff and faculty as well as to members of the community. An appropriate ID card must be shown for checkout or renewal.

  • Patrons are notified of the due date when an item is checked out. As a courtesy, overdue and fine notices are sent once a week to remind patrons when an item is past due or has been returned late. Student and faculty notices are sent via e-mail if the address is available. Otherwise notices are sent intercampus mail or postal mail as appropriate. Fines are due whether or not the notices were received.
  • Items may be renewed one time unless a hold has been placed on it. Renewals must be made in person and a printed receipt given to the patron. The item being renewed does not have to be brought in. No phone or mail renewals are accepted.
  • All items should be returned to the circulation desk when the library is open. When the library is closed, books may be placed in the orange book return at North-West Entrance of atrium.
  • Fragile items such as videos, audio cassettes and laserdiscs must be returned to the Circulation Desk. Broken or damaged items are the responsibility of the user.
Fines
Regular items 50¢ per day ($10 maximum per item)
Hourly reserve items 25¢ per hour ($10 maximum per item)
Daily reserve items 50¢ per day ($10 maximum per item)
Recalled items $1 per day ($10 maximum per item)
Lost items Cost of item plus $40 processing fee

Other Services

Photocopying: A coin operated copier is near the Circulation/Reference Desk. Copies are .05 cents each.
Transparencies: The library sells blank overhead transparencies which may be used with the photocopier. Transparencies come in white, red, yellow, green, and blue and cost .25 cents each.
Laminating: An 25" laminator is available at the Circulation/Reference Desk. Laminating is .70 cents per linear foot.
Media viewing: Equipment for viewing the library’s media material is available for use in the library. Supported formats include VHS, DVD, CD, laserdisc, 16mm, and overhead transparencies. Use of this equipment requires an ID or library card.
Telephone: Near the Circulation/Reference Desk, this courtesy phone is for local outgoing calls only. Please keep conversations short (no more than five minutes) and remember that those nearby can hear you.
Computers: A Mini-Micro Lab in the library is available for student use. Please read our Computer Policy before using the Lab.
Wireless Networking: The library is included in the campus wireless network available to students, faculty, and staff. Users must provide their own computers with 802.11B wireless capability and obtain an access code from Information Systems.


Access for Those with Disabilities

Union College Library strives to make its facilities accessible to persons with disabilities.

Entering/Exiting the Library: The library's entrance is located on the upper level on the south side of the atrium in the Don Love Building.  The east entrance to the atrium has both exterior steps and a ramp to access the doors.  The west entrance is both step and ramp-free.  The upper level may be reached  from either entrance by using the elevator at the west end of the atrium. 
Elevator: Within the library, an elevator located in the northeast area of the library provides access to all areas of the library.
Adaptive Technology:  For Union College students who are visually impaired, JAWS screen reading software is available at computer station 5 in the library's Computer Room.
